So I took a day out of my Mini Mission to let my little brothers be tourists in NY for the first time in a while. Every time they came to NY they were only driven by the major places by my family. I called it drive by sightseeing, and I hated it! How can you really experience someplace behind a glass?! In my opinion we have TV for that, but when you can actually just get out and take the whole city in you should. So that’s precisely what we did.

New York Mini Mission 11/08/2011

So by the time you read this I will already be on a plane heading to NY. I have been waiting to go back for almost a year now. I miss the city and my family so much!

While I am there I have decided to give myself a little mission. I have been searching for a new go everywhere bag. I like to call it The Best Friend Bag. I think just about every lady has one. You know that go to bag that you always grab, the bag that you just pick up in a haste without even looking, the bag that may be falling apart but you refuse to let it go. Yeah, well my dear friend has had a hell of a run, but it’s time is slowly coming to an end.

studs galore: a closer look at @teenvogue fashion editor @mksteinmiller’s amazing @MalandrinoBuzz bag! I also love all her little bracelets…

While on Tumblr the other day I saw this magnificent Malandrino Bag posted by Eva Chen and could not help but to drool. You see this is the type of bag that I have been hunting for. I love the edge that it has and the color makes it so versatile. It reminds me of a way more popular version of my BFB.

Anyhow, since I will be going back to my old stomping grounds I thought that this would be a perfect opportunity to get a new Best Friend Bag. Since NY is home of the deals, steals, and knock offs this should be easy right?? Well, we’ll just have to see. I’m only there for 5 days and have a lot of ground to cover. I’ll keep you posted!

Stay searching,

Kay

Twenty Years From Now 03/08/2011

That’s the recent inspiring quote that I found from the great Mark Twain. I’ve learned an amazing lesson from this that I will take with me everywhere I go. Disappointment will be  from the missed opportunities, just because I was too intimidated to do something and fail. Since we last spoke I have moved out of my old apartment, am currently still looking, but most importantly I finally got my first writing gig. I will actually be getting paid to write soon!!
The excitement of what’s to come is amazing! Sometimes a little overwhelming to think about, but amazing nonetheless. This is something that I have dreamed of doing and by God, now my journey begins. The gig is not on my usual topics, but is definitely something that I know I will enjoy talking about. There’s this thing I have for looking back at where people came from and how they climbed the ladder of success. To me that is way more vital of an information than what they are doing now, because they have made it now and are basking in their success. I want to know the blood sweat and tear years that got them here.
So the new mission if you could not tell, is do well with the new writing gig and continue to improve with being my own publicist. The focus of the writing that I will be doing pertains to Entrepreneurs. This is something I believe many can relate to. Even those who have never taken interest in business can admire and learn from their work ethic. Not to mention, studying an entrepreneur can teach you about versatility and adaptability. Which can be effective in any work environment and even life.
Entrepreneurs in my opinion are true hustlers. Theses amazing individuals have an intense determination that allows little room for wasting time. To entrepreneurs every minute counts. Every second is an opportunity that can help them expand their empire. The real entrepreneurs, the ones who are successful or climbing the ladder of success, are efficient multitaskers. Constantly juggling jobs, franchises, new ideas, and people interaction(which we all know is a job on its own).
Long story short, I plan on embodying some of that Entrepreneur Spirit. I intend to get highly influenced by the very same ‘hustlers’ I will be studying. Let their will power infect me like a contagious flu and encourage me to keep striving for more. Like the quote by Mark Twain, I will ‘Sail away from my safe harbour’. Besides, where has that safe harbour gotten me? Exactly! It was not until I started taking risk that my life started changing and becoming something worth writing about. So my wish is that you do the same, take a few risk. Not like gambling your entire savings on a bet risk, but following your dreams kind of risk. Telling the person you’ve always secretly loved, that you love them type of risk. Actually pursuing your passion type of risk!
Stay Risky,
Kayz

Hope you all are doing well and staying motivated. So I have been on a serious grind trying to get my writing out there, getting registered for all of my classes, and finishing up some last-minute projects.

So here’s the quick update. I have started a new blog solely for reviews, fashion, and anything that appeals to my creative side. Do not fear though, for this will continue to be my more personal blog. I still have my missions to fulfill and dreams to be accomplished.

Not mention I just realized how much more I need to learn about promotions. Like, it’s one thing to just blog and write, but there is a whole other side to it called Marketing. Of course I should have known that nowadays everything is about promoting your name/brand and getting it out there.  So what better way to do that than through various forms of social media. You know, Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, and so on.

Well, that brings me to my next mission… Learning to be my own publicists. Pretty much learn how to promote myself which will help me with getting more writing/blogging gigs. So far I have done a few an am quite thankful for those opportunities, but they are not exactly pouring in. So back to the grind I go…

Stay Motivated,

Kayz

How To Make It In America… 18/07/2011

Great question, amazing show!
I fell in absolute love with this show last summer and have been awaiting its return since. Though I almost gave up hope on its return because of how much HBO has pushed back the release date, it is finally coming back this Fall. It’s about two friends trying to ‘Make It In America’, while living the hustler’s life in New York, no matter the odds. Neither of them come from privileged backgrounds, and must do a series of hustles just for ends meet, they continue in pursuit of eventually doing that one hustle that makes them big. Or at least successful and not just living dolla to dolla. :-p

So I thought it was only appropriate that I include this in my blog, seeing as how it has to do with the focus of my blog. Just trying to ‘Make It In America’ on my own terms, doing what I love. After all is that not what we all wish for. This show is exactly what I need to keep me on track with my missions.

While we’re on the subject of trying to make it, I have just started applying for writing jobs/internships. This is a huge step for me because I have always thought that I would be working in the Medical industry because that’s what I’ve been pushed to do, all the while ignoring my true passion for writing and creativity. So long story short, I have no actual professional experience in writing, but 6 years in the medical field, a license in nursing, and way more volunteering hours than the average 21yr old. Kind of like the main character, who is an amazing artist and designer, no matter what hustle he tries to do, the artist in him just keeps resurfacing.

It’s just crazy because no matter how impossible it seems to them, they always believe that they are gonna make it somehow. Like there is no way in hell, they were made for a life of normalcy. Quite frankly, I see where they are coming from. Have you ever had that feeling in you that there is something more for you out there. That this life that you are leading now, is only temporary. Yeah, well I have that feeling. And even if I don’t become a millionaire traveling the world, being paid to write my heart’s delight, I know that this is not the end for me.

So while I continue my hustle of trying to move to New York to become a writer, I hope you continue with your dreams as well.
Stay Making It,
Kayz

Enviroment of Fashion Influences 11/07/2011

While putting together the lasts bits of my inspiration collage I could not help but think about London. All of the amazing street style that I saw. And I realized how much the actual environment itself has a lot to do with the way we dress and our style. My style is extremely eclectic because I live in Florida, but spend at least 3 Months ever year in New York, born in Jamaica, and am in love with the European sense of style. I think that pretty much sum up my style influences as for as my enviroment go. Being an Island Baby has given me my love for colors and flow outfits. New York and London has blessed me with a fearless attitude when it comes to wearing thins you normally don’t see everyone else in.

I took a few lovely snap shots of London Outdoor Markets that I visited on a daily basis while I was there. I went to a few of the big name stores and high street, but I wanted to find things that I could not get back home. So wear else to look than London’s Famous Markets.  And I must say that selection of things that you can get there are amazing and like no other. I can see why London definitely says the bar as far as outdoor markets go.

In famous Portobello Market and its lovely array fo style

Just trying to show you and overview of how packed it is on a Saturday

believe it or not, but this does not even show just half of how long the street is and all of its eclectic shops ans stalls. I truly can not wait to go back next summer for Festivals and more shopping. :)

I can see why Londoners are so crazy about vintage wear, when such great quality timeless pieces are so easily accessible, why wouldn’t you want to.

More views of inside the Canopy area at Portobello Market in London

Another side of Portobello Market. I think by now it is pretty clear to see that I had a serious love affair with this place while in London.

This was while I was at Brick Lane Market. I would consider this one the more Indie/Rocker ones of the all the Markets in London. And if you remember from the last post, this was also the one that had some of the most diverse food. Yumm!

Brick Lane had this very interesting and strange place call the Tea Room. I was not quite sure what to expect when I got in there, but it was awesome. Imagine a huge and ecltic antique shop.

The lovely fashionable masses at Brick Lane listening to some live music, while getting their make up done, and hair cut all in this very convenient area. By the look of this pick you can kinda see what I mean with how your environment influences what you wear. Almost every one is in the same color scheme, with some sort of leather on, scarf, and some sort of cross body bag.

Inside Brick Lane Market.

While at Brick Lane I met an artistic girl who designed all of these Awesome shoes by hand. This was just one of the amazing handmade things that you can find only at  the Markets that you just can’t get anywhere else. I am a huge supporters of artist and people following their own paths so I had to get a pair.

These are my new babies that I had to have!

This is like the unofficial entrance to Brick Lane. Once again, the people are wearing different clothes, but all have the same vibe.

Leather, grey, and denim every where I turn on the cobbled streets of  Covent Garden.

I love this photo because you have your Chelsea girl fashion on one hand, and on the other hand your kind of Laid Back Rocker like I saw all up and down in Liverpool.

My lovely European friends and I out and about on the streets of London.

Pubbing like a true Londoner with my Ladies. ;)

Well I just thought I would give you a taste of the London Street Style and Market scene to show you just how much your surroundings can affect the way you dress. Next time you’re getting ready in the mirror, ask yourself “would be wearing this if I were in a different city?”

Stay Influenced,

Kayz

Savvy Dressing… 10/07/2011

Its been one of those weeks that felt like it was never gonna end, but it’s finally the week-end and that means a little more me time!! With that said I finally narrowed down my choice of patterns for the Fashion Mission to three. I am ao excited about this because I have put myself on a major budget for the next 6 weeks and this is a great way to still expand my wardrobe without doing so to my purse. :)

So while looking for the just the right dress that would suit my personality, I began thinking, what is my personal style? And how can I create a dress that reflects my it. I found out that my style is a mixture of Eclectic, bohemian, street style, and the classics of course. A majority of that mosh pit of style being Bohemian. So I need to make a dress that can suit all of these styles and still be Boho enough for me to throw on some gladiator sandals, and my messenger bag for  a festival.

This where the three patterns fall into play.  Now I just need to pick one. I am trying to pick something that is versatile and can easily be layered, inter-seasonal, and flattering of course. I think I will go with simpler cuts for they would be easier for a beginner like me to make.

Finally decided to make some form of a shift dress. I am a huge fan of that cut and style and it is flattering for almost every type fo shape and frame. As well as they are one of the most versatile of dresses when it comes to styling, layer, and just wanting to look put together effortlessly. Now I just need to pick a pattern to put up for sacrifice. I do not want to waste any of the good fabric from my Mummy so I will be taking a trip to Joanne’s and see what I can scrung up

I have always been cost conscious of clothes and spending money in general because my mother was always looking for the cheapest solution. I don’t blame her, feeding my 4 athletic brothers, 24 hr working/soccer player dad, and I was no joke. Thanks to her I have learned a lot about money management. And thanks to my “you get what you pay for,” Dad, I know good quality when I see it. That being said, I have always been pretty blessed with find great bargains on purchases. Even though that is true, I still feel like if I am going to properly reinvent myself, I must also add a bit of that change to my closet. That too, and thanks to the new fitness regimen, a lot of my clothes can no longer fit me. Yaaay!! :D

So I will be altering some of the oldies that I can’t let go, while slowly adding new pieces to it little by little. Of course whatever I am unable to find in the stores, I will be looking for a way to make myself. I’m heading to Joanne’s tomorrow and will show you what fabrics I get later. As well as, maybe show you a bit of my wardrobe in some later post. And the Inspiration Collage will be up and posted Monday.

Stay Savvy,

Kayz
